Markiewicz is perhaps best known for his collaboration with harpist Marilu Donovan as LEYA. The duo has defied expectations throughout their career, obtaining a singular, legendary status for their unmistakably beautiful and disturbing work. Through two studio albums, two EPs, a mixtape, a porn, and a flurry of collaborations, they have traced almost every genre of contemporary music. The Guardian called their most recent work, I Forget Everything, “a titanic feat.., music that sounds simultaneously 300 years old and somewhere from the distant future.”
Markiewicz’ work has been featured extensively, with notable coverage in The New York Times (“unearthly dissonance: the auditory equivalent of awakening in the fog of a bad dream only to discover you’re still trapped in the nightmare”), Pitchfork, i-D, Esquire, Vogue, Paper, Fader, FACT, Noisey, Document Journal, Bandcamp, and numerous additional publications.
He has toured extensively around the world, appearing at thousands of venues of all sizes, with notable bookings at Paris and New York Fashion Week, Le Guess Who?, Rewire, Maifeld Derby, Oblivion Access, Three Points, Unsound, LOST, B-Sides, Sensor, New Forms, Creepy Teepee, Dutch Harp Festival, and many others.
Notable commercial credits as a composer, performer, and musical director include Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein, Acne Studios, Saks, Pornhub, Proenza Schouler, HoodbyAir, Elena Velez, Agency Skincare, and Zoe Gustavia Anna Whalen.
With an early background in the Brooklyn DIY scene, Markiewicz cut his teeth in pioneering noise rock band The Dreebs, which Pitchfork called “the best kept secret in New York City.” During this time he was a founding member of the Le Wallet collective, which served as an incubator, home, and DIY venue for many important indie rock luminaries of the recent era.
Markiewicz also maintains an active teaching practice, coaching students on subjects ranging from voice to string arranging to music theory to business. His mission as an artist centers around dissolving the barriers of classical and experimental music, with an emphasis on bringing these idioms into other more contemporary, mainstream forms. This practice has also materialized in curation, as Markiewicz has worked to develop nightlife programming that incorporates classical music in new ways. It is his belief that, taken at face value, there are no limits to musical language and its application. He continues to dedicate himself to the purveyance of ancient sounds within the modern landscape.
